I believe that the use of these terms (anoxic, anaerobic) is different between different disciplines. In the field of microbial ecology, it is my understanding that anoxic conditions are conditions in which respiration of oxygen is not possible due to its absence but where facultative anaerobes such as denitrifiers or iron reducers are able to proliferate. Anaerobic conditions refer to conditions where obligate anaerobic respiratory organisms such as sulfate reducers and methanogens proliferate.
