The smallest reef aquarium 2001
Hello all, Im always happy to find a new board. I can read italian but surprisingly well without google translator it's likely you may be reading my sentences backwards ~
I wanted to introduce my reef aquariums its nice to meet you all. These are 1 gallon and below systems, 2 to 5 years old. They are vases, betta tanks converted into high-powered tanks and evaporation SPS management is my key niche in the hobby. The Tanks are either sealed, and do not evaporate at all, or are only partially sealed needing topoff ounces or twice a week yet they can fit in the palm of your hand, or leave only the footprint of a coffee cup. Just a strange science, hope you enjoy its always fun meeting new board communities. hello brandon and welcome here...
it seems your tanks might become a topic of huge interest for us all to discuss, can you post some more pics and infos on how you actually set them up and mantain them? thx in advance! by the way... very nice setups from what can be seen! |
Thank you very much for stopping by!
May I post an article I wrote on The Invention of pico reefs? That will explain and I will gladly stay around for follow up ideas or to see the work of others, its very interesting to take part in these discussions thank you nice to meet you Brandon from tx http://www.nanoreefblog.com/features...o-reef-biology http://s4.postimage.org/q04Ni.jpg http://s3.postimage.org/EeHcS.jpg http://s2.postimage.org/Rx1mS.jpg |

thank you very much!
Your avatar is my favorite coral I feed it mysis cyclopeeze and to maintain the color and I like to keep them away from really bright spots in the tank. Better yours have blue centers ~ mine are very small and may change as they age here are some macro shots of a small rack aquaculture in the bowl. Each frag can be removed for sale and has room to double in size, the bowl produces coral steadily Because it is additive Dosed with C Balance 1 mL per alternating days morning ... like 1 / 4 capfull part in on Monday, 1 / 4 of part b capfull tuesday etc http://s3.postimage.org/ElggA.jpg http://s1.postimage.org/RSHbJ.jpg http://s4.postimage.org/q68q9.jpg http://s3.postimage.org/ElCIS.jpg http://s2.postimage.org/RD9_0.jpg |

thank you friends UC and Abra here are a couple more to show something I call exoscaping.
It's where you make it seem the coral is shooting through the glass, by affixing the skeleton of the genus that matches the inside, to the outside of the bowl so people can touch the reef skeleton when its on display http://s4.postimage.org/q9WSS.jpg http://s3.postimage.org/EsteA.jpg http://s1.postimage.org/R_0E9.jpg |
wow! your work is amazing! I was thinking of giving up with my nanoreef tank, 'cause it's really hard to obtain bright colors from sps corals into a small system like that... But now that I've seen your tanks i'm changing idea XD... I'll follow the topic... tell us some details on how you set them up...

Hi Mark!
I have not been Able to keep reds or blue colors as well in the SPS, they tend to develop a brownish hue likely due to zooxanthellae multiplication Which is common in smaller systems / unskimmed of higher nitrogen tanks But, alveopora and Goniopora, both of which are notoriously hard to do well to keep the systems and I think both the SPS and the LPS benefit from my feeding schedule. I never feed in between water changes, only just before a 100% water change. So if I feed once a week, the water is changed once a week. I may feed twice in a week and change the water twice when the bowl is this aged, and packed with over 100 frags of coral in one gallon. Most systems are fed in between water changes, Which can increase the nutrient load. By feeding a large amount, and then changing it out an hour or two later, I can support more bioload do with less waste, the timing of events is where the luck and patience paid off. a water change is only 3 minutes long, so even at twice per week it's still less work than most nanos Because of the evaporation control The dosing system of adding c-balance only in the mornings, before lights on, I feel is also critical. Any tank that can grow coralline algae should be Able to produce SPS id check on your coralline algae levels first if you are having trouble keeping good coloration, they will almost always retain color in low N water, with good micro feeding support and strong Calcium/Alk levels which the C balance handles in these pico reefs very well Thanks for stopping by! |
Hi Brandon, very nice and very interesting ........welcome and stay with us also to see our tanks ......somes are really nice.........seeyou on AP;-)

I will hang around, i was just reading on your forum where he's had his tang since 1998 I find that more amazing, that's a very healthy lifespan in a captive reef including tank itself being that old!
Your tanks are amazing and your forum stays very busy B the freshwater one: this tank is totally stand alone, the only electricity is the light. It is a bog system, distributing water by capillary action to the ferns and mosses. it is seven years old now and grown to the ceiling in my living room shot in this pic it was 5 mos new: [img] http://s3.postimage.org/FCck0.jpg [/ img] [/ url] http://s4.postimage.org/r22ZJ.jpg http://s2.postimage.org/SHFPA.jpg http://s4.postimage.org/r2zpA.jpg |

i have been called crazy many times by my girlfriend so its ok
* Honestly she is very angry to have had an 18 piece drum kit in the middle of the floor for 5 years plus daily thrash music as loud as the human ear can take. Did you know that keeping these pico tanks inside a house with 4 15 inch pa speakers and live band The Coral gear trains not to withdraw upon physical shaking? the bass drum can move the pictures on my wall but the corals stay open after about 5 minutes each jam session. For the next two hours they will not close up, I see so many signs of higher processing in these animals they fascinate me. thanks for reading! bestiale ......come farà a pulire i vetri??

if you cut hanger wire at a sharp angle you have a stepped scraping tool. it scratches sometimes, but removes coralline algae thoroughly!
also this, a razor blade and surgical tools http://s2.postimage.org/19llA.jpg ------------------------------------------------------------------------ and this one, I can slip a piece of scouring pad for dish washing, a little cut disk, in between the miniature scraper I built it will cut microalgae on the glass which is harder than coralline algae to remove I have to build many miniature tools to work with palmtop reef http://s4.postimage.org/urEg0.jpg http://s2.postimage.org/19MN9.jpg |
Fantastic:-D;-)#25

ALGRANATI, perché non ci avevi pensato? :-D:-D:-D
Brandon, as I told you everyone's dropping his jaw at your works... I missed one detail, how do u light them? By ambient light only? |

hi! yes here is a picture of the lights. its all power compact.
the vase: coralife mini aqualight + 13 watt power compact, 50 50 bulb Sealed tank: 2 of the same 13 watt power compacts. Since the sealed tank is half gallon, thats 52 watts per gallon so it needs a fan! The vase does not need a fan/ http://s3.postimage.org/L6QbJ.jpg |
incredible!!-05
compliments, really fantastic!! |
riccardo thank you!
Something changed today for the first time in years...I have found possibly another coral that cannot live in the unskimmed vase without chemically stinging all the other corals the red goniopora from my picture above it did well for a couple weeks but im noticing my blastomussa and hydnos acting funny. my options are to change water 3x per week for a month and see if it stops, but if any polyps show more wear I will take it out and sell it. Despite the common explanations for coral death coming from other corals, I have found most corals get along within the gallon well. litophyton, and now gonipora, seem to be exceptions to the rule! |

Brandon very compliments for your works! #25
I've a question for you... I read that you play all the day trash music at very loud volume, I also play the electric bass in my bedroom where my tank is located, in this regard I would ask you if the low frequencies may have some effects on the corals and whether they could be positive or negative on them. Thank you! ;-) |
veramente stupefacente..ma la temperatura ????
|
hello brandon,i see this 3d today, and your work is amazing!!!
you are a monster and you brake more old ideas in italy, first of all: no color in very small tanks i'm happy to see these wonderfull and,why not, colorfull micro micro tanks. you are a genius,congratulations:-)) |

hi!
thank you for stopping in my email notifications take Did not know I missed out at this time.
the temperature is challenging on the small square sealed tank. it must be fanned, and the house can not get above 78 degrees But this is attainable. Easier is to make the vase, it is only one degree above ambient temperature of the house Which I prefer to be at 74. The winters are no problem, Each tank has a heater Oversized 50x lol i do prefer to be the crazy American or at least the bad drivers of the group lol i was just telling That Some Other friends in the shot of me driving my car with the reef I Was knee while driving slowly photgraphing But ver. I needed the first mobile video Taken reef Had To Be Done. my friend with the bass Cliff Burton is my fav! yes you can play 20hz thumps if your live rock is structured accordingly. I do all the time ... watch as the corals get used to the sounds and stay open as you jam, They Do in my tank even with blasting pantera cowboys Exactly so loud right now! |
